I appeared on Mr. Povich's old show, "Panorama" in the spring of 1984. This was when he was still with WTTG in Washington, D.C., and well before the days of programs geared towards sensationalism for its own sake. It saddens me that he's apparently sold out.
The topic for that segment was childhood sexual abuse. I appeared with my mom. We shared our firsthand experiences of being victimized as a child and non-offending parent, respectively. We went in full view before the cameras. Other guests were members of The Chesapeake Institute and an admitted sexual abuser. The abuser's physical and personal identity was concealed, and he was in a separate area.
It was an excruciating 48 minutes, given the topic. I fell apart as soon as the red lights on the cameras went dark. Mr. Povich was compassionate following the taping, taking a few minutes to check on me and to thank me and Mom for our courage. I can only hope he truly maintains such decency on similar level these days.
No, I do not watch Maury. I've seen a couple of segments, but he's not the man I once respected.
